And a few safety rules

Melksham Carnival Safety Guidance Notes. Please Read Carefully

Float Construction

Please THINK SAFETY when constructing your float.

1.All floats are to carry a portable fire extinguisher which is easily accessible to those participating ensuring that participants are conversant with the operation of the fire extinguisher.

2.When building your float ensure that all decoration & equipment are secured to the vehicle/trailer in some way. It must be remembered that floats are stopping and starting continuously throughout the procession and any items that are not firmly secured are liable to fall off and possibly injure individuals on the float or spectators.

3.The above also applies to float occupants. Ideally the occupants of the float should be seated. If they are standing , the design should incorporate safety hand rails to ensure that occupants are not thrown forward if the vehicle has to stop suddenly.

4.Please ensure that adequate arrangements are made for getting on & off the float. Ideally steps or ladders should be used. Do not attempt to get on or off the float during the procession unless the vehicle is stationary. In all cases when the vehicle is not parked up it is essential that the driver is made aware that you need to get on or off the vehicle.

5.Please familiarise yourself with any local or national road legislation that might effect the type of vehicle that you are allowed to use in the procession.

6. Procession entrants undertake the event at their own risk and should make provision on their own behalf to insure against any personal injury or claims arising out of any incident for which they may be deemed responsible.

Safety On The Procession Day

When arriving at the carpark please follow the instructions of the procession marshal. The marshal will be wearing a luminous tabard. You will be instructed where to park and given a route to your parking space. Size of float will partly determine where you are asked to park. Parking and manoeuvring space is very tight so your full co-operation in this area is essential.

You should never leave your vehicle unattended as you may be required to move it at short notice. The driver should be available at all times.

Never join the procession before being instructed to do so by the Marshal. The Marshal will inform you when you are required to move off your allocated parking spot.

It is also very beneficial if each float can appoint at least two responsible adults (one either side of the float) as safety stewards to ensure that spectators (especially children) do not get too close to the float.

PLEASE HELP US BY FOLLOWING THESE FEW SIMPLE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND REMEMBER THAT SAFETY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL OF US.

THANKYOU FOR HELPING US TO ENSURE THAT THIS CARNIVAL IS BOTH SAFE AND ENJOYABLE!!
