Royal Family (Carnival Queen) Competition forms maybe downloaded [from here] and should be returned to the Tourist Infomation Centre in Melksham.

Float forms maybe downloaded [from here] and should be returned to the Tourist Infomation Centre in Melksham.
If you are entering a float, you will also need to sign a safety agreement which can be downloaded [from here]. You can also download and print a copy of the safety briefing for float operators [from here].


Float Classification

Float Classifications Explained ...


Class 1 PUBS & CLUBS: Floats entered by a pub , local club or association.


Class 2 YOUTH: Any Youth organisation having the majority of its participants under 16 years of age


Class 3 PRIVATE/INDIVIDUAL: Any entry that is entered by an individual or organisation that is not part of a business.


Class 4 WALKING GROUP: Large,small or fancy dress.


Class 5 TRADE OR COMMERCIAL( i.e businesses)




IMPORTANT

To help prevent coin throwing could you please provide 2 walking collectors who will be issued with collection buckets to collect coins.

SAFETY ADVICE

Below are the procedures you will need to follow when constructing your float. (Given out to every entry in our procession)

THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART IN MELKSHAM CARNIVAL PROCESSION

AS PART OF OUR RESPONSIBILITIES IN ORGANISING THE PROCESSION WE ARE KEEN TO KEEP ALL PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE. BELOW IS SOME ADVICE TO HELP KEEP YOU, YOUR GROUP AND SPECTATORS SAFE WHILST TAKING PART IN THE CARNIVAL FUN.

GENERAL INFORMATION

* PLEASE NOMINATE AN ADULT MEMBER OF YOUR GROUP TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ASPECTS OF SAFETY, AND TO ACT AS A POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN YOUR GROUP AND MELKSHAM CARNIVAL BOTH BEFORE AND DURING THE EVENT. A MOBILE NUMBER TO BE GIVEN ON APPLICATION FORM.
* A CONTACT FOR THE MARSHALS WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE PRE PARADE BRIEFING
* ALTHOUGH FIRST AID IS PROVIDED IT IS ADVISABLE TO CARRY A SMALL KIT. WE WOULD ALSO SUGGEST THAT YOU CARRY DRINKING WATER TO STOP THE EFFECTS OF DEHYDRATION.
* CHILDREN MUST HAVE AN ADEQUATE NUMBER OF ADULT SUPERVISORS.
* WE DISCOURAGE THE CROWDS FROM THROWING COINS AS THIS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY; IN RETURN THE SPRAYING OF WATER AND THROWING OF OBJECTS INTO THE CROWD IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
* THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL WHILST IN THE PROCESSION IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
* PLEASE ENSURE ALL ELECTRICAL ITEMS IN USE ARE FITTED SAFELY, WATERPROOF, AND ARE SUITABLE FOR OUTSIDE USE, REMEMBER LIGHT BULBS CAN GET VERY HOT.
* PLEASE ENSURE YOU COME PREPARED FOR THE WEATHER CONDITIONS, FOR INSTANCE THAT YOU HAVE A SUPPLY OF SUNSCREEN.
* IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, THERE WILL BE STEWARDS AND POLICE ALONG THE PROCESSION ROUTE, AND THEY ARE THERE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ASSISTANCE SHOULD YOU NEED IT.
* IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DIAL 999 IMMEDIATELY.

PEDESTRIAN ENTRIES
* IF YOU ARE WEARING A LARGE COSTUME, BE AWARE THAT THE WIND MAY CATCH IT AND FORCE YOU TO FALL OVER. IT IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE SOMEONE TO HELP YOU WITH IT AND MONITOR YOUR FATIGUE. REMEMBER COSTUMES ARE USUALLY FLAMMABLE; STAY AWAY FROM SOURCES OF HEAT.
* IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN IN YOUR WALKING GROUP, PLEASE KEEP THEM TOGETHER AND AWAY FROM MOVING VEHICLES. ENSURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH ADULT HELPERS FOR THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN IN YOUR GROUP.

FLOAT SPECIFIC ENTRIES

* ENTRANTS MUST PRODUCE, TO THE ORGANISERS, PROOF THAT THEY HOLD PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE, VEHICLES THAT DO NOT NORMALLY CARRY PASSENGERS WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER THEIR NORMAL VEHICLE INSURANCE.
* ALL VEHICLES SHOULD CARRY A SUITABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
* NO FLOAT CAN EXCEED 14 FOOT IN HEIGHT.
* THE TOWING VEHICLE AND TRAILER MUST BE IN A LEGAL AND ROADWORTHY CONDITION. THE TRAILER MUST NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM TOWING CAPACITY OF THE TOWING VEHICLE.
* THE DRIVER OF THE TOWING VEHICLE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GENERAL SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE, TOWING MECHANISM, BREAK-AWAY CHAIN AND GENERAL STURDINESS OF THE FLOAT, INCLUDING ADEQUATE INSURANCE COVER. ANYTHING THAT COULD FALL OFF MUST BE SECURED.
* THE DRIVER OF THE TOWING VEHICLE MUST HAVE A CLEAR VIEW OF THE ROAD AHEAD AND BOTH SIDES OF THE FLOAT AT ALL TIMES.
* THE USE OF ADULTS TO WALK ALONGSIDE THE FLOAT WHO CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN BY THE DRIVER IS RECOMMENDED TO PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL PAIR OF EYES ALONGSIDE THE FLOAT AS PROCESSIONS CAN BE VERY BUSY PLACES.
* IF THERE ARE PEOPLE ON YOUR FLOAT, YOU SHOULD ENSURE THAT THEY ARE SEATED IN SECURELY ATTACHED SEATS, OR THAT ADEQUATE HANDRAILS ARE IN PLACE TO STOP THEM FALLING OFF. KEEP THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE FLOAT TO A REASONABLE LEVEL.
* THE DRIVER SHOULD KEEP UP WITH THE PROCESSION AND NOT ALLOW SIGNIFICANT GAPS TO FORM WHICH CAN ENCOURAGE SPECTATORS TO FILL THE ROAD AHEAD.
* THE DRIVER SHOULD PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO SPECTATORS TRYING TO CUT ACROSS THE PROCESSION AHEAD OF THEM AND THOSE CROWDING TO EITHER SIDE.
* PLEASE KEEP YOUR VEHICLE CENTRALLY AWAY FROM EITHER SIDE OF SPECTATORS IN CASE A SPECTATOR IS PUSHED OR FALLS INTO THE ROAD AHEAD.
* NOBODY SHOULD RIDE ON A FLOAT WITH THEIR LIMBS HANGING OVER THE EDGE, OR GO BETWEEN THE TOWING VEHICLE AND TRAILER WHEN IT IS IN MOTION.
* YOU SHOULD ONLY CLIMB ON OF OFF YOUR FLOAT WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS STOPPED MOVING.
* IF YOU ARE USING A GENERATOR, PLEASE TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS WHEN FILLING IT, AND STORE FUEL AWAY FROM SOURCES OF HEAT IN APPROVED CONTAINERS. (THE USE OF A DIESEL GENERATOR IS ADVISABLE)
